Love Letter Match for Little Monsters

I recently set out this activity for my littler learners and they loved it! It was the perfect way to practice their literacy skills while gearing up for Valentine’s Day!

Why letter matching?

Letter matching is great for pre-readers and early readers alike. For my 3 year old, I set out the capital letters. She had to match the letter erasers to the corresponding letter – and she did a great job!

No – she doesn’t know her letters yet. So why was I having her complete this letter match mat? Activities like this expose pre-readers to letters and their shapes. It also helps them develop the concept that letters hold meaning, and allows them to get familiar with the alphabet.

My 6 year old is a beginning reader, and she knows her letters well. So I set out the lowercase letters for her, and she had to match the capital erasers to the corresponding lowercase letter. This was a review activity for her, something where she didn’t have to think quite as hard as with new information. Instead it helped her to develop her eye tracking skills as she searched for the letters, which look different to the one she held in her hand.

Have a great day and happy teaching!
